Growing up, I took every opportunity there was to make a wish. I would wish on pennies before tossing them into wells and I would blow on dandelions to get my wish. One of my favorite methods for getting a wish was to stand under a tree in autumn and catch a falling leaf.
There are numerous ways to get a wish, but here are thirteen less common wishing charms.
1. Up a Hill
When standing at the bottom of a large hill or mountain, make a wish. If you can reach the top of it without looking behind you, your wish will come true.
2. White Horse
When you are out and about on your travels and you happen to see a white horse, make a wish. White horses are lucky and, as long as you do not see that same horse again that day, your wish will come true.
3. Found Nail
If you find a nail lying on the ground, hammer it into the ground using a rock as the hammer and make a wish. Your wish will come true.
4. Bluebird
Seeing a bluebird is a fortunate event. If you can say a wish before it flies away, your wish will come true.
5. Lucky Horseshoe
When you hang a horseshoe over your door, everyone who passes through your door gets a bit of luck. The first person to walk under the newly hung horseshoe, however, gets to make a wish.
6. Meteor
Also called a shooting star, if you see a meteor, quickly make your wish. If you can make your wish before the meteor disappears, your wish will come true. It’s also said that when seeing a shooting star, if you can say “money” three times in a row before it disappears, you will receive a large amount of cash.
7. Turkey Buzzard
Turkey buzzards can be seen everywhere in the mountains where I live and they are almost always seen in groups of two or more, which makes this wish charm a touch difficult. Upon seeing a turkey buzzard that is all alone, make a wish and then do not look at that same turkey buzzard again that day for your wish to come true.
8. First Star
When the first star appears in the evening sky, make a wish. If you want the wish to come true, do not say another word a second star appears in the sky.
9. Red Cardinal
When you see a red cardinal, quickly make your wish and then blow it a kiss. If you can do this before it flies away, your wish will come true.
10. New Moon Wish
On the night of the new moon, go outside and say your wish to her. To make your wish come true, do not look at the moon again for one lunar month, when she is at new moon again.
11. Wish on a Crow
If you see a crow flying overhead, make a wish. If he doesn’t flap his wings before he is out of sight, your wish will come true.
12. How Corny
If, while you are out walking during the autumn months, you spot a kernel of corn on the ground, pick it up, make a wish, and plant the kernel in the ground. If it sprouts next spring, your wish will come true.
13. Ring Turning
Turn a ring around another person’s finger eighteen times and then make a wish. It will come true as long as the ring wearer doesn’t cross her fingers.
