Having lived in coal mining country, I have often wondered what would happen if one of the many mines underfoot would collapse. That is what happened to these two women when they were outside conversing in their back yards.
Old Earth Yawned As Women Talked
It Was Some Yawn and Separated the Talkers About 25 Feet
Scranton, PA., Jan. 4. — Mother Earth apparently tired of the backyard conversation between Mrs. John Jeffries and a neighbor.
She yawned.
It was a capacious yawn, taking in Mrs. Jeffries and most of the backyard. The neighbor clinging to the palings on her side of the fence, suddenly found herself looking down on Mrs. Jeffries where she sprawled twenty-five feet below. The roof of an old mine had tumbled in.
Mrs. Jeffries only slightly injured, crawled out on a ladder.
