There are frog superstitions from all over the world and nearly all of the old folk superstitions are a touch weird, if not completely bogus. Nevertheless, it is still fun to learn the strange beliefs surrounding one of our favorite pond critters.
Frog Soup
While we certainly do not advocate harming frogs, one old bit of folk superstition claimed that a soup made from three different types of frogs would stop epileptic seizures.
Love
Young frogs hopping around the yard will strengthen the love within the home.
Warts
Some people believe that if a frog pees on you, you will get warts. This, of course, is not true.
Child Soul
Frogs were said to be children who died in childhood. It was extremely bad to kill a frog for this reason.
On the Road
If you see a frog hopping across the road it will bring you good luck.
Day Croak
If the frogs are croaking during the day, rain is coming.
Teeth
Never let a frog see your teeth or you will get cavities.
Into the House
If a frog unexpectedly hops into your home, good luck will follow.
First Frog of Spring
When you see the first frog of spring, quickly make a wish and it will come true.
Avoid Pregnancy
A very bizarre superstition says that if a woman spits into a frog’s mouth, she will avoid getting pregnant. This, of course, is not true, otherwise we would be seeing a lot of ladies hanging around ponds for a chance encounter with a frog.
