At one time there were numerous superstitions about funerals. There were a few things that we should do on the day of the funeral, but mostly there was a long list of things we should not do on the ominous day.
Here are some of the more popular funeral superstitions from the past.
Running
It is a grave mistake to run during a funeral. It symbolizes that you are chasing after death.
Black Cat
Should a black cat pass in front of a funeral procession, another member of the family will pass away.
Rose
It used to be said that throwing a rose into a grave was to throw your love away. Today, throwing roses into graves is a popular funerary trend.
Flowers and Plants
Never take a live plant from a gravesite. It will not grow anywhere else.
Funeral Procession
It is extremely unlucky to cut into a funeral procession. A ghost may follow you home.
Hell
Rain must never fall into an open grave. If it does, the person who is buried there will go to hell.
Counting Cars
Never count how many cars are in a funeral procession. If you do, that is how many years (months or days) you have to live.
Door Open
On the day of the funeral, a door must be left open in the home of the deceased. If not, a terrible argument will occur among the mourners.
Saturday
Saturday burials were once considered bad luck. However, in today’s society, Saturday burials are common because it is a day when most people have off.
Postpone
To postpone a funeral will bring another death to the family.
