If someone told you that you could see who you were to marry if only you would dunk your undies in the well, would you do it?
In an article published in 1950, a “recent” case was mentioned about a woman from Devon who was jailed for selling witchcraft. As the story went, the woman told some girls that if they took off their undies, dunked them in the well, carried the wet undies home between their teeth, and then dried them before a fire, they would see an image of the men they were going to marry.
The girls must have tried it out, someone must have seen the sight, and that led to the arrest of the supposed witch.
Truthfully, though, she was probably just having a good laugh at their expense. [1]
