Since you were a child, you have probably heard the old superstition that you should never open up an umbrella indoors. Why is that? And are there any other superstitions about the simple umbrella?
1. Open Up Inside House
According to some superstitions, if you open up an umbrella inside your house when it is not raining outside, you are inviting rain to come. Decorating the inside of the home with an open umbrella brings terrible rain and the only way to stop it is to close the umbrella.
2. Walk Inside with Open Umbrella
Should you walk into your home with your umbrella still open, you will bring the rain with you. In other words, you bring bad luck into your home.
3. Umbrella on the Bed
You must never place an umbrella on your bed, open or closed. To do so is to invite a visit from death.
4. Drop on the Ground
If, by accident, you drop your umbrella on the ground, superstition says you must not pick it up. If you do, you will have bad luck. Instead, someone else needs to pick it up for you.
5. Marriage
To get married under an umbrella brings good luck to the bride and groom. In this case, the umbrella symbolizes shelter and protection which is then provided to the married couple.
6. Prevent Rain
Of course, a more recent and far more cynical superstition states that if you carry an umbrella with you, it will not rain. However, if you ever forget to bring that umbrella with you, you can be assured of a downpour.
