“While We Were Marching Through Georgia” was a Union song sung during the Civil War. I’ve included a YouTube video of the original song.
In 1903, a Civil War veteran passed away after singing the song, and a new version of the song was printed in his honor.
His Last March
John T. Mason, 74 years old, a veteran of the civil war, was heard singing “While We Were Marching Through Georgia.” Next morning he was found lifeless in his bed, his eyes wide open. A physician who was called stated that the old man must have died about the time the song was heard by the others in the house.
