How to Make a Simple Hanging Pincushion Instructions From 1915

Here is a very simple, hanging pincushion that was made to be hung in the guest room. The instructions and illustration are from 1915.

For the Visitor’s Room

A little pincushion with cotton attached is a necessity in every bedroom; it will hang up somewhere about the dressing table and be always at hand when dressing, for often buttons come off at the last moment or tapes have to be stitched in, so that with the necessary cottons to hand, no time is lost hunting for them.

Make a little bag of calico and fill it with bran, then cover the bag with any remnant of pretty silk or satin. Secure the pincushion firmly.

Take about half a yard of narrow silk cord; the color of it will depend upon the shade used for the little cushion. Fold the cord in two and sew the center of it along the top of the pincushion; thus a length of cord will hang either side of it. Now take two reels of cotton, a black and a white, and thread them on the cord, one on each side, then attach the cord again to the cushion, but not the end of it, just allow sufficient cord to let the reels hang at the top of the cushion. Take the two ends of cord that remain after the reels have been secured, and sew them neatly together; this will form a loop to hang the little article up by. In the cushion, put pins of all kinds and sizes, and on each reel of cotton have a needle already threaded.

This little contrivance will be found a great convenience, and save time and annoyance. It should certainly find a place in the visitor’s room.
