Legend has it that Pep was condemned to Life Without Parole by Governor Gifford Pinchot, accused of the act of killing his wife’s beloved cat.
The narrative paints Pep as a villain of the animal kingdom, his incarceration documented by a mugshot as if he were a common criminal.
The Truth
Delving into the truth reveals a less dramatic, though no less intriguing, story.
Pep entered Governor Pinchot’s life as a gift from Cornelia Bryce Pinchot’s nephew during the Governor’s first term, quickly becoming a cherished pet.
Despite his mischievous habit of chewing on household items, the tale of his being a murderous pet is greatly exaggerated.
Pep was sent to the Eastern State Penitentiary.
Pep’s Years of Incarceration

I visited Eastern State Penitentiary while it was still undergoing renovations, and the story of Pep was told.
