St. Stephens Resident Discovers Treasure Trove of Gold Coins from 1755 After Storm

Imagine the good fortune of having a tree blown down on your property, exposing an old tin filled with gold coins that had been buried at the base of the tree many years ago. That’s what happened to Mr. Robertson back in 1919.

Finds Box of Gold

MOBILE, Alabama. August 25, 1919. — I.L. Robertson, an aged resident of St. Stephens, in Washington County, near Mobile, according to news received here, found several thousand dollars in gold coin.

The money was in an old rusty tin box that was exposed to view when an old tree was blown down on Saturday by a storm.

The money was in ones, two and a half, five, ten, and twenty dollar gold pieces of the date of 1755.

Robertson was seen with the money but refused to tell the amount found.
