Roberto Molino, a poor farmer, discovered a $5 gold piece while digging mesquite roots on a land grant. He called his sons to help continue the search, leading to the unearthing of two more coins.
Molino then brought in a team plow and intensified the search, eventually uncovering a decayed handbag buried a foot underground. Molino claimed the bag contained $200 in gold. Most of the coins were dated 1850.
