Lone Highwayman Spends a Pleasant Day
FRESNO, Calif., July 9, 1906. — A lone highwayman caused panic on the Yosemite stage road on Saturday, holding up four stages in quick succession and robbing a total of 70 passengers. Armed with a Winchester rifle and wearing a red handkerchief over the lower part of his face, the highwayman seemed to enjoy the chaos, laughing as he issued his commands.
Throughout the day, the highwayman compelled a male passenger from each stage to assist in collecting money and valuables from the other passengers. The collected items were then deposited in the road before the highwayman ordered the driver to proceed. The ordeal left many passengers, particularly women, in a state of panic, with several fainting during the robberies.
Upon hearing of the incident, a sheriff and a large posse quickly responded to the scene. Word has since been received that the highwayman has been captured, although his identity and details of the capture have not yet been disclosed.
