Hudson Farmer Discovers Civil War-Era Gold Coins in Backyard

As reported in 1936, a farmer in Hudson, Hans Peterson, had been uncovering Civil War-era gold coins in his backyard three years.

The total value of the coins found amounted to approximately $100, with the most recent discovery being a $10 gold piece.

The coins, found at varying depths, are believed to have been scattered due to stump dynamiting operations in the area. Local legends suggest that a resident once buried his wealth near a distinctive tree, but no definitive hoard has been located.

Peterson and his sons carefully searched the area but did not engaged in extensive mining efforts. While several offers had been made to dig the land in exchange for a share of the potential findings, Peterson did not agree to any partnerships.
