In 1905, residents of Crook County were abuzz with speculation about a mysterious man who lived in a dugout in the desert, fiercely guarding his solitude with a rifle.
The Mysterious Man
In Crook County there is a mysterious man and the people in the vicinity call him the “Mysterious man of the desert.”
The man lives in a dugout, and who he is or where he came from is not known. No direct information is being sought by the people, as whenever they approach too close to his residence the muzzle of a big rifle slides gently into view.
Two men, braver than the rest, made a visit to the place and investigated when the owner was not at home. They found two blankets which constituted his bed, and no trace of a fire. He obtains his food by foraging at night.
