Philadelphia Laborer Found $5,542 in Gold Coins Hidden in Pipe

Of all the strange places to find a hoard of gold, one man found a stash of gold coins inside a pipe near Center City in Philly.

In Philadelphia, 1956, an unemployed laborer discovered a stash of gold coins totaling $5,542.50 hidden inside a pipe found at a slum clearance site near Center City. 

Julius Bracey, 35, came across the pipe while collecting junk and broke it open to reveal coins ranging from $2.50 to $20, with dates spanning from 1863 to 1928. 

Police Captain William Leinhauser noted that many former residents of the area had worked for the Baldwin Locomotive Works and were paid in gold.
