Nation In The Grip Of Spanish Flu

It is believed that the Spanish Flu killed about 500 million people worldwide from 1918 to 1919. Many survivalists and “preppers” are afraid that something like this will be happening again soon.

Nation In The Grip Of Spanish Flu

A distemper or disease, supposed to have been brought to the United States while raging in Spain, hence known as Spanish influenza, is spreading over the United States at a more rapid rate than was even accomplished by the “Harrison Grip” when it swept the country twenty-seven years ago. As a matter of fact the present epidemic disease is said to be nothing more nor less than the grip, which made its greatest sweep over America when Benjamin Harrison was president, with the possible exception of a preceding epidemic of the same disease when William Henry Harrison had his short experience in the presidential chair.

However there are differences between the present “Flu” and the grip, as it has been known, especially during the epidemic periods. The present disease is said to be one of short life, running its course, unless complications arise, in a very few days — but complications seem more likely and to occur more frequently than was the case with the grip, for judging from the newspaper reports, we believe the present death rate to be greater than it was in the grip epidemic of twenty-seven ago. The grip, at that time, rarely let loose a victim in a few days, held a large proportion of them as long as a month, with many ups and downs, and the records will show that among old people the disease proved to be eventually fatal in a large proportion of cases.

If you become a “flu” victim, take every precaution against pneumonia, for there lies the real danger. An advance serum treatment is said to ward off the disease and it is given in Lexington as elsewhere by the progressive physicians.
