Cats As Plague Remedy

Cats are useful little buggers. I’ve got three geriatric cats and, in spite of their climbing years, they still manage to kill moles outside the house.

The article below comes from a 1908 newspaper declaring that the cat cult should be brought back so that more people would keep cats and help end the spread of the plague. It makes absolute sense. Kill off the cats and you’ve got a rodent problem. With rodents come the plague. European history has taught us that vital lesson.

Cats As Plague Remedy

An Indian correspondent of the North China Daily News writes: “The newspapers have latterly been full of all sorts of suggestions for the stamping out of plague. For instance, never kill rats; if you do the fatal rat flea may be driven to feed on you. Also, compel each householder to keep cats. In fact, let the cult of the cat as it prevailed in ancient Egypt be revived in India. Plenty of cats, no rats.”
