A young woman entered a Washington, D.C., nursery carrying a two-week-old baby dressed in little more than the bare necessities.
She told the staff she would return.
But after the mother disappeared, police learned that she had reportedly already tried to leave the child at another institution and had been turned away. Now the infant remained in the care of strangers while authorities searched the city for the woman who had abandoned it.
Police Seek Mother Who Deserted Child
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A young mother, who deserted her infant child at the Holy Family Day Nursery is sought by police.
The woman brought the child to the nursery after, it is said, officials of the Foundling Hospital had denied her permission to leave it there.

According to the police, the woman said she would return for the baby, who is about two weeks old. It was meagerly dressed, it was said.
