Nellie Cameron arrived in Newark prepared to marry a man she had known for only a few days.
The supposed doctor had taken charge of her luggage and promised to meet Nellie and her bridesmaid after traveling ahead by train. But when he failed to appear, Nellie realized that both her bridegroom and the suitcase containing her $70 were gone.
She had believed he was a doctor for one simple reason: he had told her so.
Took Nellie’s $70 Instead of Marrying Her
NEWARK, New Jersey. — Effie Johnson and Nellie Cameron are Providence girls. Nellie came to this city Sunday, prepared to marry Dr. A,S, Brackett, whom she met in her home town. Effie was to act as bridesmaid.
Before leaving on the Joy Line for New York, Dr. Brackett took charge of Nellie’s luggage, but insisted on carrying her dress suit case, in which Nellie had $70 tucked away. Then the doctor said he would take the train for New York and meet the girls in this city.
Sunday, Nellie and Effie engaged a room at 27 Halsey Street, but no doctor showed up. Then it dawned on Nellie that she had been victimized. She went to police headquarters and told Captain Carroll her story.
She had known Dr. Brackett for a few days, she said, and he was a doctor — she was sure of that because he said so.
