Lake St. Clair is a hotspot for UFO and USO sightings, so when I found this article from 1922, I instantly perked up.
Residents along Grosse Point reported seeing what appeared to be a vessel burning roughly two miles offshore, with some even claiming that a large steamship seemed to be standing nearby.
Yet when officials investigated, they found nothing. There was no wreckage or debris.
The lighthouse keepers could not confirm that there was a burning vessel and neither could the nearby passing freighters.
Whatever appeared to be burning on Lake St. Clair that night apparently vanished before daybreak, leaving behind a mystery and a little mention in a newspaper article from 1922.
Fire On The Lake Mystery
GROSSE POINTE, Michigan. — Harbor officials made little headway today in verifying a report that a yacht or some other small vessel burned to the water’s edge in Lake St. Clair late last night and sank.
Lighthouse keepers declare they saw no fire on the lake and masters of passing freighters knew other of the report.
Residents of Grosse Pointe declare they saw the fire about two miles off shore. Some said they believed they could make out a large steamship standing by.
Power boats were sent to the scene before daybreak, but could find no wreckage or other evidence of mishap.
