Early one morning in April 1909, Mrs. Mary Theodore let her small black-and-tan dog, Jimmy, into the yard while she prepared breakfast. It was an ordinary part of the morning routine until Jimmy discovered a bundle lying outside.
Inside was a two-month-old baby.
The infant, dressed only in a white flannel nightgown and wrapped in the bundle, had apparently been abandoned during the night. By the time Jimmy found the child, the baby was barely alive from exposure.
The baby was carried inside, given warm milk, and wrapped in additional clothing. Once the child’s immediate condition had improved, the infant was placed in the temporary care of a city nurse.
Jimmy the Dog Saves a Baby
NEW YORK CITY. — Jimmy, a small black and tan dog owned by Mrs. Mary Theodore, saved an abandoned baby from death by exposure early yesterday morning.
Jimmy was allowed to go out into the yard while Mrs. Theodore prepared breakfast. Here he found inside a bundle a two-month-old baby, in a white flannel nightgown, which had been abandoned.
The baby was just alive, but hot milk and additional clothes were provided, and the baby was turned over to the city nurse, who will take care of it for the time being.
