We’ve read about adults falling from horses and getting dragged, but this also happened to a hefty number of children in the past. Here is a report from out of Virginia, 1899, of a 6-year-old falling from a horse and getting dragged for half a mile.
Fearful End of Horseback Ride
June 6, 1899. PETERSBURG, Va. – James, the six-year-old son of Mr. George Burgess, met with a most shocking death yesterday afternoon near his home. He, with his little brother, was riding a horse, when the animal ran away, throwing his riders.
James, in falling, got his foot caught in the lines and was dragged by the horse for a distance of half a mile and killed. His head was horribly mutilated.
The other little fellow fell clear and was uninjured.
