Aphrodite – Her Myths, Symbols, and Worship

Goddess Aphrodite can be traced back to the ancient Greeks. She was the goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. Aphrodite was often depicted as a beautiful woman, sometimes with wings.

In one version of her origin myth, Aphrodite was born from the sea foam created when the severed genitals of Uranus were cast into the sea.

In Mythology, Edith Hamilton explains:

“She is the daughter of Zeus and Dione in the Iliad, but in the later poems she is said to have sprung from the foam of the sea, and her name was explained as meaning ‘the foam-risen.’ Aphros is foam in Greek.”

However, in The Penguin Dictionary of Symbols (Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant, Translated by John Buchanan-Brown), we find mention of the castration myth:

“Aphrodite sprang from the seed of Ouranos (Uranus, the Heavens), scattered upon the sea when Ouranos was castrated by his son, Cronos – hence the legend of the birth of Aphrodite from sea-spume.”

She was married to Hephaestus but had many affairs, most notably with Ares, the god of war. Aphrodite was also the mother of Eros, the god of love.

In ancient Greece, Aphrodite was considered the most beautiful of the gods and goddesses. She was also considered the goddess of sex, love, and fertility. Her cult was popular throughout Greece, and her temples were some of the most popular tourist destinations.

Powers of Aphrodite

Love is a mysterious force that drives us to do great things. It makes us feel happy and complete, and we can’t help but crave it. But what is love?

Love is an emotion that is created by a hormone called oxytocin. The brain releases this hormone when we feel happy, safe, and loved. It is also responsible for the “high” we feel when in love.

Aphrodite, the goddess of love, is said to power the engine of love. She is the one who inspires us to feel love and to crave it. She is the one who makes us feel happy and complete, and she is the one who drives us to do great things.

Aphrodite’s Symbolism

Aphrodite is a complex goddess with many contradictory aspects. She is both the embodiment of pure, unbridled desire and the guardian of sacred marriage. She is a goddess of love and sex, but she is also associated with violence and warfare. Her sacred metal is copper.

Despite her many contradictions, Aphrodite is always portrayed as a beautiful and alluring goddess. She is the epitome of feminine grace and sexual desire. Her influence is still felt today, and she remains one of the most popular goddesses of the ancient world.

Worship of Aphrodite

The worship of Aphrodite permeated all aspects of Greek life. She was considered the most important deity in the pantheon and was worshiped in both temples and private homes.

The worship of Aphrodite was prevalent in Greece, and her temples were some of the most lavish and expensive in the country. In addition, the Greeks celebrated several festivals in her honor, including the Aphrodisia, the celebration of love.

Barbara G. Walker (The Woman’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets) tells us:

“The calendar still keeps the name of Aphrodite on the month dedicated to her, April (Aphrilis).”

Aphrodite and Adonis

Aphrodite and her mortal lover, Adonis, were famous for their passionate affair. Adonis was a beautiful young man, and Aphrodite was drawn to him instantly.

The two of them enjoyed a brief but intense relationship. They were always together, and Aphrodite showered Adonis with gifts and love. However, their affair was not to last.

One day, Adonis was killed by a wild boar. Aphrodite was heartbroken, and she refused to leave his side. Instead, she stayed with him until he was buried.

A more in-depth retelling of the love of Aphrodite for Adonis can be found in The Golden Bough (Sir James Frazer):

“Mirrored in the glass of Greek mythology, the oriental deity [Adonis] appears as a comely youth beloved by Aphrodite. In his infancy the goddess hid him in a chest, which she gave in charge to Persephone, queen of the nether world. But when Persephone opened the chest and beheld the beauty of the babe, she refused to give him back to Aphrodite, though the goddess of love went down herself to hell to ransom her dear one from the power of the grave. The dispute between the two goddesses of love and death was settled by Zeus, who decreed that Adonis should abide with Persephone in the under world for one part of the year, and with Aphrodite in the upper world for another part. At last the fair youth was killed in hunting by a wild boar, or by the jealous Ares, who turned himself into the likeness of a boar in order to compass the death of his rival. Bitterly did Aphrodite lament her loved and lost Adonis.”

Even though they were separated by death, Aphrodite and Adonis will always be remembered as one of the most passionate couples in history.

Aphrodite and Hephaestus

Aphrodite and Hephaestus are two of the most famous Olympian gods. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty, while Hephaestus is the god of fire and metalworking. They are also the parents of Eros, the god of love.

Aphrodite and Hephaestus had a rocky relationship from the start. Hephaestus was born crippled, which made him very unattractive to Aphrodite. As a result, she often ignored him and preferred to spend her time with other gods and mortals. This made Hephaestus very jealous, and he repeatedly tried to catch Aphrodite in the act of cheating on him.

One day, Hephaestus finally caught Aphrodite with her lover, Ares. He trapped them in a net and revealed them to the other gods. This embarrassed Aphrodite, and she begged Hephaestus to forgive her. He eventually agreed, but their relationship was never the same.
