Bare Bottom Superstition

We, the people, are a ridiculous species on the planet Earth. We point and make fun of the strange rituals and habits of other animals without realizing just how silly our own rituals, habits, and superstitions make us appear.

For example, the baring of the butt. According to A Dictionary of Gestures (Bauml and Bauml, 1975), people would flash their butts at someone throwing off the evil eye and “Italian seamen bared buttocks against unfavorable winds, since winds are ascribed to good or evil supernatural beings.”

Bare butts would also be held up toward the sky to ward off hail and rain. In fact, anything we didn’t like, we were allowed to flash our asses at because who in their right mind wants to look at your butt, especially during the days when baths were not common.
