Man believes he has found old Spanish silver mine in Texas

Netflix keeps showing me all of these treasure hunting shows in my feed, so, instead of zoning to the television, I’ve been diving into the newspaper archives to learn more about the treasure hunters in the past.

The article below was published in 1911 and gives a brief glimpse into a rancher’s findings on his land.

West Texan Searches for Buried Treasure

BRADY, Tx., May 25, 1911 – That he has discovered an old Spanish silver mine is the belief of L.D. Morris, who lives on his ranch thirty miles northwest of here.

He has resided there many years and is a pioneer of West Texas.

He had been assured as long ago as 1878 by a Mexican treasure hunter that a hidden mine or buried treasure could be found on his ranch.

Not until lately has he investigated the truth of these claims. Not long ago he located a spot on his ranch that had the appearance of sunken ground, and excavating, he discovered a room 14 feet wide by fifteen feet long, the sides of which were solid rock.

He soon uncovered two more rooms, and he believes the old Mexican treasure hunter’s prophesy will prove true. He has found evidence that the rooms were used for mining purposes.

Morris expects to continue systematic excavation in the hope of finding old Spanish treasure.

The Spaniards were in this section in the seventeenth century.
