Young woman learned shoemaking trade from father

A bit of a fluff piece, but it is interesting to see the fascination with women in trades back in 1913.

This short article is about a young woman who learned the shoe making trade from her father.

Girl Shoemaker Plies Her Trade in Little Shop

We usually think working at the shoemaking ad mending business is a man’s work.

Here is the picture of a little girl who has entire charge of an old-fashioned shoe shop.

She knows, perfectly well, how to patch a hole neatly. She can half sole shoes as well as her father can.

She has been learning this strange trade for ten years. When she was five years old she commenced paying regular visits to the shoe shop which belonged to her father. Bit by bit she picked up first one piece of work and then another until now she knows it all. She wears a big leather apron while handling the shoes.

It’s a novel occupation, but she thinks it is much pleasanter working in her father’s shop than out away from home at something else.
