Boston Boy Who Stole a Bicycle Was Sentenced to Spend Saturdays in Bed

In 1906, a Boston judge found an unusual punishment for a boy who had stolen a bicycle.

There would be no jail cell, no fine, and no public scolding. Instead, Judge H.H. Baker of the new Juvenile Court sentenced the young offender to spend his Saturdays in bed.

The boy was allowed to attend school during the week, but once Friday supper was over, his weekend punishment began. He was to say his prayers, climb into bed, and remain there until Sunday morning.

The sentence was to continue “until further notice,” making it one of the more peculiar punishments handed down by the court.

Even the boy’s mother approved.
