A passenger aboard a steamer from Boston apparently became so desperate for a drink that he turned to one of the ship’s navigational instruments.
After the vessel arrived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, an officer discovered that a spirit compass attached to a lifeboat had been removed and drained of its alcohol. Suspicion quickly fell on a passenger whose unusual behavior during the night suggested he may have consumed the liquid.
By the time the ship’s officers pieced together what had happened, however, their suspected compass-drinker had already boarded a train and disappeared from Yarmouth.
Ship Passenger Drinks Alcohol From Compass
YARMOUTH, Nova Scotia. — Soon after the passengers disembark an officer of a steamer from Boston discovered that a spirit compass on one of the lifeboats had been removed from its position and emptied of alcohol.
The actions of a passenger during the night prior to the arrival of the steamer here led the ship’s officers to suspect he drank the alcohol. He had taken a train out of Yarmouth, however, before he could be questioned.
