When King’s Cafe opened in its new brick building on West Second Street in 1922, local readers were told they were looking at one of the most modern restaurants in Wisconsin.
Its impressive features included vitrolite tables, bentwood oak chairs, coffee urns, coolers, a cigar case, and even a washroom for guests. In the kitchen, an electric toaster, bread cutter, steam table, and large icebox represented the latest in restaurant convenience.
This is a really awesome look into what a “modern” restaurant once was.
Modern Restaurant Opened to Public
King’s Cafe is now located in the new brick building on West Second Street that has recently been completed. This is one of the most up-to-date and completely equipped restaurants in the state.
There are eight vitrolite tables and bent wood oak chairs to match.
There is a lunch counter and counters, coolers, coffee urn, and a cigar case in the front room, with a wash room for guests in the basement.
There is a large kitchen equipped with a big range, electric toaster, bread cutter, steam table, icebox, sink, and many other modern conveniences.
The second story is used as a flat for the proprietor’s family, with rooms for transients.
