When Sam Grosz was struck from behind with a hammer at a carnival near South Milwaukee, the blow was so violent that the metal head became buried in his skull, exposing his brain.
Doctors held out little hope that the 44-year-old spectator would survive.
Yet one month later, Grosz was still alive and, against all expectations, reportedly on the road to recovery.
Hit With Hammer, Man Is Recovering
Sam Grosz, 44, Carrollville, believed fatally injured when struck on the head with a hammer, is today on the road to recovery.
A month ago, after the blow had buried the metal head of the hammer deep into his head, exposing the brain, little hope was entertained for his recovery.
Archie Blumley, 25, St. Louis, a concession operator, became infuriated at Grosz, a spectator at a carnival near South Milwaukee, and struck him from behind with the hammer.
