William Dubuque was walking home near Richmond, Vermont, one August evening in 1918 when he noticed an automobile stop along the road.
As he approached the area, he heard the cries of a baby.
Hidden in the bushes behind a fence, Dubuque discovered an abandoned infant girl. The car he had seen was gone, leaving authorities with an unsettling question: who had left the child there, and why?
The baby was taken into local care while the state attorney began an investigation into her abandonment.

RICHMOND, Vermont. — A baby girl was found Saturday evening about eight o’clock by William Dubuque, between the farms of Henry Westall and Herbert Stockwell.
Dubuque was on his way home when he noticed an automobile stop at the place where he found the child, and as he drew near he heard the child’s cried. He investigated and found the baby in some bushes at the back of the fence.
He notified the authorities and the child was taken to the home of Henry Westall. Later, it was taken to the home of Mrs. George Bressor. The State Attorney is conducting an investigation.
