Treasure Hunters Seek Peruvian Gold

PLYMOUTH, England – Albert Edwardes, 50-year-old professional treasure hunter, has put the finishing touches on a reconverted fishing cutter, the Heather Glen.

He is prepared to sail again for Cocos Island area off Peru, site of a fabulous fortune of lost gold.

According to legend, the authorities in Peru 200 years ago packed the national gold into the schooner Marie Dyer when revolution threatened.

The crew mutinied and sailed off with the treasure, but their ship was wrecked on Cocos Island.

Since then, 64 expeditions have tried to find the gold, of which Edwardes has headed two.

Sailing with Edwardes on this voyage will be his wife, a friend, Edward Sanders, and a pet cat.

Their ultimate goal will be Norfolk Island, north of New Zealand, where they can live in languid, South Sea style by paying six shillings four pence a year (about $1.25).

Edwardes said he was doubtful if the Cocos treasure existed, but he wanted one more try.
